inauguration weekend is finally here f you've been around town today, you know. the roads and trains packed with people and organizers are very busy, too, making all the last-minute preparations before the big day on monday. good evening, everyone. we have everything you need to know to get you through this weekend. team coverage throughout the district tonight from the first inaugural parties to the forecast for all the festivities. but this inauguration weekend started with a day of service to honor dr. martin luther king jr. president and mrs. obama rolled up their sleeves today with 500 volunteers at an elementary school in northeast. vice president joe biden and his wife jill prepared care packages at the national guard armory for u.s. troops and first responders. on the national mall, a day of service summit just wrapped up a f few minutes ago. >> jim, darkness is set unwilling here now on the

national mall. but today volunteers in the big white tent behind me were lighting up the place. thousands of people poured through the national day of service tent headquarters already to volunteer like jennifer artist and her two sons of little river, maryland. >> it's important to have my children with me because they get to see the importance of serving others. and we're also celebrating martin luther king's day and this is something that he would want us to do as well. >> how about 100 public and private, local and national groups of all types offered volunteer encouragement. what is best buddies? >> best buddies creates opportunities for friendships and employment for people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. >> hi. >> chelsea clinton left the tent to sack groceries for seniors, a project at friendship collegiate academy in northeast where 92% go on to college. big crowds also visited t king

monday and how security is getting ready from the inauguration. >> reporter: pennsylvania avenue traffic will give way to the precision and pageantry of a parade with hundreds of thousands coming to see. >> it's an all hands on deck day for us. >> metro is ready to doits part. we'll be opening three hours early at 4:00 a.m. we'll be running 17 consecutive hours of rush hour service levels. so until 9:00 p.m. for rush hour service. >> reporter: if you're coming by metro, plan ahead. now is not too soon to get your fare car loaded with enough money to get you there and back. metro suggests you get to your spot early and leave the same way you came. okay, so you made it. you followed all the rules. you took metro. you have a prime spot on the parade route. are you going to be safe when you get here? well, it's just as much planning that went into that. rocky del monica is a former

there today. will we have the same luck when the real party gets under way on monday? that's the question. and i'm afraid to hear the answer. our meteorologist is here with a look at the inauguration forecast. chuck? >> don't fear the inauguration day forecast just yet. it is going to be chilly, i can give that you much for now. i think it's going to be on the whole a usable outdoor weather day. boy, what a winter turned in to be outside today. current temperatures are still in bonus territory. upper 40s to near 50 degrees still. still 50 in fredericksburg. 49 in washington. no rain today. a perfectly clear sky from start to finish. the clear skies are going to go through the remainder of your saturday evening. temperatures in the mid to upper 40s. back into the upper 30s and low 40s as we get towards 10:00, 11:00 midnight time frame under a generally clear sky. that is not all that cold by january stands arards. there is one part of the inauguration forecast you'll want to pay close attention to,

jim. that is the opportunity for a few snow flurries late in the day ahead of arctic, arctic air. we'll talk about that with the seven day. >> yikes. okay, thanks, chuck. the formal festivities for barack obama's second inauguration get under way tomorrow. tonight, it's all about the fun and it's all about kids. darcy spencer is live at the convention center downtown tonight where the kids inaugural concert is just getting under way. darcy? >> reporter: jim, i've been out here for a while. i was hoping to catch a glimpse of some of the stars who are expected to perform tonight. no such luck on my part. but i was able to talk to some of the people going to the event tonight. thousands of military members, family and friends are expected to attend the invitation only event, officially called the kids inaugural, our children, our future. this military family came from charlottesville. >> i think it's a great opportunity for my family, something for my kids have been looking forward to all week. so we're just happy to be here. >> we're here as a family.

sad day for baseball fans, especially in baltimore. earl weaver died last night. jason pugh is here now with more on quite a character. >> yeah, this was a great man. not only on the field but also off the field. one of the legends of the sport. when you talk about the name earl weaver, everyone around the baseball world knew you were talking about one of the best managers in the big leagues. today the hall of famer passed away at the age of 82. weaver was known throughout baltimore as the duke of earl. he was also a baseball legend, assuming 1,480 wins throughout

his career. he was a three time manager of the year. he managed the orioles for 17 years. he took the organization to the world series four times, winning the fall classic in 1970. he was inducted to the baseball hall of fame in 1996 and was known throughout the sport as an innovator. weaver was also known for his temper and famous arguments with umpires. he once was ejected in both games of a doubleheader. he passed away while on a cruise sponsored by the orioles. his cause of death is yet to be determined. a great, great man. baseball sorely going to miss him. >> truly a legend. thank you, jason. >> other news now, an investigation tonight into a deadly shooting near howard university. police are trying to figure out what led to the confrontation. news 4's jackie benson live in northwest tonight to explain what happened. jackie? >> reporter: good evening. this is one of the areas of the city that is receiving extra police patrols because of inauguration weekend. but this homicide is not

believed to be connected to any inauguration weekend celebration or event. police were called about 2:30 this morning after someone called 911 to report hearing gun shots. the location is directly across the street from howard university dormitory and students walk up and down the block at all hours. the victim, 44-year-old tracy mcfadden was shot several times and collapsed on the sidewalk. he was pronounced dead at a local hospital a short time later. homicide detectives and officials from the city's alcoholic beverage regulation agency question employees at chuck and billies. they found no evidence that the shooting was connected to any type of disagreement there and an employee tells news 4 he does not remember seeing the victim in the establishment that evening. and, again, short time ago i talked to a witness, someone who was present out here that night. they say that they do not believe that this man was inside

a three day siege at a natural gas complex in algeria ended with more bloodshed today. that's according to the algerian interior ministry. they sent its own special forces into the complex killing 32 islamic militants. 23 more hostages also died. several foreign workers at the plant are still unaccounted for tonight. authorities are checking the complex for booby traps. hundreds honored martin luther king today at the annual peace and freedom walk in southeast. that event split into two marches, the freedom march across the frederick douglas bridge and the peace march led people up martin luther king avenue to shepard park. the annual event serves as a reminder of king's contribution to the country. >> he would be happy that people are continuing his legacy and the opportunity we have at least

once a year to remember the principle for which he stood. >> there was a rally in shepard park after the march. and besides honoring king's legacy, speakers tagged issues facing d.c. residents. members of the u.s. military will help the first family dance their way into their second term of the white house. a staff sergeant from the u.s. air force will have the honor of dancing with the commander in chief and a gunnery sergeant from the u.s. marines will dance with first lady michelle obama. both say they're very excited but also a little nervous. >> i'm excited but i'm nervous as well. i'll be in front of millions of people dancing. i'll do my best. >> i was kind of surprised when i first put my name in the hat, i really didn't expect to be selected. so when they said it was going to be me, i was quite surprised. >> two other service members have also been selected. they'll dance with joe biden and his wife jill.

so we hope they have done a lot of practicing. >> nice day outside. >> can we clone sflit. >> we can carbon copy it for one more day, that will be tomorrow. monday is still a little bit iffy around here. winter is on its way back. it starts to arrive hard core monday afternoon. that means you have to enjoy tomorrow as much as can you. it should be every bit as nice as today was. outside, a very clear sky. temperatures made it into the mid and low 50s. officially down at national airport, high temperature 54 after a 33-degree start. so today another mild day. today was eight degrees warmer than average. so far for the whole month of january, 6 degrees warmer than average. that surplus of warmth will not be lasting for too much longer.
